Mid Week Motivation

This has been almost a year of "starting the diet tomorrow". Now that the holiday season is upon us (Yay Halloween!) I am determined not to let the rest of the slip away in mindless snacking and excuses for skipping the gym. My start date is not going to be the New Year this year. It's going to be right now (well, a few days ago, you understand)!

Tuesday Randomness:: Election Reflection

I've done a bang-up job of avoiding all things Election this year. I'll do my part with some quiet research from my computer with my mail-in ballot. I did fall in love with this little video someone sent to us at YabYum and I had to heist it.

Wait, wait, wait... this one is better...

Monday Project

I finally did it. I returned to the kitchen after an extended hiatus. I had become overly frustrated with some of my kitchen failures and renounced cooking. However, after my recent visit to see my brother and his fam in NY I was inspired by that kid's ability to pull together a meal. How did he get all the householder talent and the lucrative career path? My brother would be the perfect modern woman if only he were a woman. Instead, he's a dude who can whip up a mean beef burgundy or a restaurant's worth of perfectly poached eggs. That bitch.

Anyway... I was inspired to attempt cooking one more time. Last week, I successfully knocked out four meals which I consider a huge success. This week, I'm kicking it up a notch meaning more home-cooked meals and a little branching out into new recipes. May God have mercy on all I feed.

The best part? I'm finally utilizing Pinterest as I intended: an effective tool for organizing useful information. Not just yuppie porn for suburbanites. Here are some of the recipes I made last week or that are in the works for this week...

French Bread Pizza

Southwestern Acorn Squash

Baked Garlic Brown Sugar Chicken

Lemon Bars

a moment of zen

With Halloween smack dab in the middle of the coming week, it seems appropriate to reflect on those darker things this Sunday afternoon. The unknown, the mystical, the mysterious, the occult, the otherworldly. The line dividing life and death grows thin this time of year.

Vacation!

I was on vacation visiting my brother and his familia in New York...
I am returning to the blog-o-sphere this week, slowly.

For the Home:: Is the canopy too much?

I love canopies despite the fact I have never actually had one up in my room... unless you count the sheet I put up to enclose my bunk when my kid brother and I shared a room back in the day. Somehow, I just haven't had a room that could pull off the splendor of a canopy. Someday, perhaps.

Randomness:: 60 Tiny Love Stories

60 Tiny Love Stories to Make You Smile might be just the pick-me-up needed early on this week...

here are a couple of my favs

2. Today, I walked my daughter down the aisle. Ten years ago I pulled a 14 year old boy out of his mom’s fire-engulfed SUV after a serious accident. Doctors initially said he would never walk again. My daughter came with me several times to visit him at the hospital. Then she started going on her own. Today, seeing him defy the odds and smile widely, standing on his own two feet at the altar as he placed a ring on my daughter’s finger.

10. Today, I have an elderly patient who is suffering from a severe case of Alzheimer’s. He can rarely remember his own name, and he often forgets where he is and what he said just a few minutes beforehand. But by the stretch of some miracle (perhaps the miracle of love), he remembers who is wife is every morning when she shows up to spend a few hours with him. He usually greets her by saying, “Hello my beautiful Kate.”

21. Today, a woman who must have her voicebox removed due to cancer is enrolled in my sign language class. Her husband, four children, two sisters, brother, mother, father, and twelve close friends are also enrolled in the same class so they can communicate with her after she loses her ability to speak aloud.

Fall Project:: Halloween Ghosts

I actually did it. I crafted something I saw on Pinterest. Amazing, I know. Now no one can accuse me of only pinning without any follow through... maybe. Mother and I are trying to find new avenues for adventure during our time together. Women, even Jewish women, can only shop so much (without proper funding).

Here is the link for the original source for "my" idea. Fair and square, she also jacked the idea from elsewhere. Welcome to the free-information-revolution...
Just click the image to go to her site for instructions.

Mother and I opted for smaller ghosts. Zissel is going to hang a bunch in the tree in front of her house. I put a couple in front of bluehouse.

Fashion Friday:: I could be a Pirate

I don't much time on the high seas in this desert town but that doesn't mean I'm not swashbuckling in my heart of hearts. This week's fashion post is brought to you by my inner pirate.

Sure, I'll go camping...

This week's "For the Home" post is actually, sort of, an out-of-the-home post. One of my friends just got back from a weekend camping trip with her kids and I got to thinking, "Would I like to go camping?" My answer? Yes, maybe, I think... given the proper amenities.

"The Proper Amenities"

1.  A backseat, inflatable bed for when I get tired of sleeping on the ground/in the cold/ in the open where anything might attack.

2. Smores maker to avoid sticky messes when away from proper hand-washing equipment.

3. Sleeping bag suit, obviously.

4. Go Girl, giving the ladies outdoor bathroom privileges we always envied.

October is Here!!

I love Autumn! It is a special time of year in many places but in Arizona it marks the breaking of the ungodly heat and the welcoming of winter and holidays and, of course, pumpkin-flavored everything. I have big plans for this month including continuing my health-improving adventures, assisting my homegrrls with their Halloween party planning, making costume arrangements, and many around-the-house projects aimed at improving bluehouse efficiency and general de-cluttering. Here's a look at the month to come...

I'll be making this for my costume this year! I'll let you know how it goes!

Halloween Party Planning! I'm on punch!

Well, I'm excited.
